So I created this blog as a foray into a new way of thinking. My husband and I have, slowly and after much research, started inching towards being healthier, organic, and overall well balanced. We have identified the need for sustainable farming (or gardening). And to limit preservatives or chemicals, finding new ways to cook things for ourselves and dogs. While all of this sounds wonderful (or you might think we are dirty pot smoking hippies), we have no idea how to do it. But I am not one to get discouraged over a challenge. My desire for us to be living cheaper and eating cleaner is strong enough that even with mistakes, I hope to get there someday. And with my ADD tendencies, I am hoping that this blog will help me focus on one thing at a time. I am interested in a few of these topics:
- How to recycle more
- How to compost
- How to garden
- How to DIY home products that do not contain harmful chemicals yet still get the job done around the house (IE: Dishwashing detergent, soap)
- How to be more frugal
A lot of these things overlap, like learning to make my own laundry detergent. But I am seriously pathetic in the creativity department, and the patience department for that matter. So if I can do it, I am sure everyone else can too.
Coming up will be some dog treat recipes. Currently we order Taste of the Wild Bison food for our two dogs, Walker and Elsa. Walker is 8 and Elsa is 2, and we have found through trial and error, that Taste of the Wild yields the greatest nutritional value. Digestive health is superb, as is weight. Their skin is in great shape as is their coat. You can tell a lot about a dog's state of health by their poop. Not that I investigate with a microscope everytime they do their business, but a healthy dog with good food will have a better stool than someone who feeds their dog Alpo. If you want to see where your dog food ranks, http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-food-reviews/dry/4-star/ is an unbiased site. Anywho, I love being able to give them dog treats as we do not hand out table scraps (though my 8 month old sure loves to give the german shepherd her yogurt bites). However, our pet stores charge so much money for treats that are not healthy and you get such little quantity. So my next blog will be detailing my account with making dog treats. More to follow!
